PostSubject: How to Make Digital Animation   Wed Dec 30, 2009 3:31 am

Hi everyone pirat

This article will describe the process of creating a digital animation. I will assume that you have no previous experience and you're tight on budget. With that said, please enjoy reading this article and happy animating to each of you!

Warning: When creating an animation, whether it is a short or full length, is that this will not be easy. This will
take a lot of hard work and dedication, but you can have a lot of fun during the process.

Now that you have been warned, the first thing you need to do is come up with the story you want your animation to tell. A good story will make up for not so great artistic skills (me); however, those artistic skills will come with time. Your story can be anything you want: a person walking, a fight scene, a person turning their head, or an animal doing whatever it is best known for. For this animation I have chose a stickman who will walk center stage and perform some action like jumping. After you get an idea of your character and story, you can spend a little while sketching out the main components of the story and what your character will look like (you can use any program you're comfortable with). When you're happy with this move on to the next step.

The second thing you need to do is get an animation software. Remember when I said that I'd assume you're on a tight budget? Open your favorite search engine and type "Pencil animation software" and you will find a great 2D
software that is free and mimics drawing with a real pencil. Got it downloaded? Good! Go ahead and open it up
and the program will automatically be on the first key frame. Using the pencil tool, sketch out your character on the first key. Move the highlight to frame 2 and add a key by press the "+" button on the timeline. Repeat this process of drawing and adding frames until your character reaches the desired position/end state. (For my stickman, I'm drawing his legs and arms moving ever so slightly until he reaches the desired place). If you don't want your character to move on a certain frame, just copy the previous (CTRL + C) and paste (CTRL+V) into the new key frame. If you want to add color to your animation, go ahead and do that with the fill bucket (or the tool of your choice).

One thing we forgot to do, in the bottom right of the program is the FPS and we want to change this number to "24." Now click the play button. Does your animation zip by? If you grab a frame with a left click, you can slide it up and down the timeline. Move each frame, leaving a space between each key. If the newly created "in between" frames do not have anything on them, you may have to copy the previous key, convert the in between to a key, and paste it onto the frame. Hopefully, you won't have to do this. If your animation still zips by, try leaving two spaces between each key or add more in between drawings.

Once you're happy with the drawings and the art, you can export your animation by clicking on File->Export and choose your format (as of this writing, Pencil can not export to the mov format). Hopefully you have created something you are proud of. If animation is a serious hobby or a dream of yours, consider getting a blog and a website in order to promote your work.

This has been a basic article describing how to make your first animation. Following this article, you may be concerned that your animation is only a few seconds long. That's okay because as you practice and progress, your animations will be longer and better!

Keep practicing and be watchful for future articles that will delve further into the animation process! Until then, Happy Animating!
